ResizedImage93119-Alan-OlsonThe Montana Petroleum Association (MPA) announced on January 26, 2016 their new executive director.

Former State Senator, Alan Olson has been charged with leading Montana’s oil and gas industry into another busy year.  Olson has extensive, firsthand experience in energy policy, oil and gas operations, and advocating for a business climate that makes Montana a better place to do business.

A graduate of Havre High School in the oil and gas country of north central Montana, he went to work for Halliburton in 1978 and attended the Halliburton Energy Institute in 1980, 1982, and 1984.  After leaving Halliburton in 1989 Olson went to work for the Montana Board of Oil and Gas Conservation as a field inspector, a position he maintained for 19 years. For the last seven years he has worked for Sanjel covering Montana, the Dakota’s and Wyoming.

“Alan brings an invaluable breadth of energy, legislative and policy experience to the Montana Petroleum Association, and we look forward to his work on behalf of Montana’s oil and gas businesses,” said Greg Brown, President of MPA.

Olson is well versed in policy issues pertinent to Montana. He has served on his local school board, the Montana Unified School Trust Board of Trustees, Snowy Mountain Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors and is a former president of the Montana School Boards Association.  He was elected to the Montana House of Representatives in 2000 and served four terms in the House. He was elected to the Montana State Senate in 2010, where he served until 2014.

During his time in the legislature, Olson served on the Federal Relations, Energy and Telecommunications Committee in the House, and the Energy and Telecommunications Committee in the Senate.  He was Chairman of the House committee from 2005 to 2008 and the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee from 2011 until 2014. After leaving the legislature he continued to stay involved in natural resource development matters.

“I am excited to be a part of the Montana Petroleum Association. I am looking forward to working with the MPA Board of Directors, membership, and the public to expand the awareness of the economic contributions of the petroleum industry in Montana. I know I will find this a stimulating and rewarding career.”
